Alison Kay – New work (world premiere)
Mark-Anthony Turnage – Grazioso! (2009)
Oren Velasquez Hirtenstein – Castles in the air (2018)
Brett Dean – Sextet Old Kings in Exile (2010)
Our concert programme Old Kings in Exile is about relationships and remembering. Alison Kay’s Spirit is a gentle, wistful piece, full of fluttering charm, written in memory of her mother. Her new work, premiered in this concert, is its companion piece.
In contrast, Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Grazioso! is 10 minutes of rhythmic rock-out inspired by Led Zepplin while Brett Dean’s Sextet, Old Kings in Exile, is a taut musical drama, with repeating melodies and skitterish sounds endlessly circling, searching for what has past. Castles in the air is an impressive debut from 18 year-old Oren Velasquez Hirtenstein composed at ‘Sound and Music’ Summer School, dedicated to Oliver Knussen.
